QUESTIONS TO LIVE BY


Why do I keep ending up here? Symptoms are intelligent solutions to psychological dilemmas. A way of preserving relative psychological integrity in a situation of limited resources. As much as we might suffer in our repetitive symptoms or patterns, they offer us strange comfort in promising us a more certain future.

Who am I? A serious question at the heart of therapeutic work. One answer could be that “I” am a collection of emotional and behavioural patterns. When we get frustrated by our habitual living we might ask the question “What part(s) of me does this pattern serve?” And “How vital is this pattern in my sense of being “me”?”

Psychotherapy is a process of changing contradictions into paradoxes - we embrace the reality of multiple truths instead of the one truth being threatened by the other (Our minds don’t work that way).
